![]() This is going to be a long post (I think I kept it at least slightly shorter than Clockers itself), but that’s because there’s a lot to unpack here out of all of Richard Price’s works, this one casts the longest shadow.Īt the time of Clockers‘ publication, it was a big deal that Price was putting out a novel at all. Instead, he released Clockers, the novel that would come to be regarded as arguably the best work of his career. ![]() He could’ve laid down his pen and settled into a professorship somewhere, or even coasted on his reputation while churning out middling work, and no one would’ve been able to say he hadn’t had a hell of a run. ![]() ![]() If Richard Price had retired in 1992 he would have already been leaving behind an impressive body of work: Four critically acclaimed novels, an Oscar nomination for his screenwriting, a #1 box office hit, even a credit on a Michael Jackson music video. ![]() ![]() ![]() Which means, this time, Katarina Bishop is making up her own rules. Kat might be in way over her head, but she’s not going down without a fight. ![]() But it’s the third problem that makes Kat’s crew the most nervous and that is simply… the emerald is cursed. First, the gem hasn’t been seen in public in thirty years. That’s why Kat isn’t surprised when she’s asked to steal the infamous Cleopatra Emerald so it can be returned to its rightful owners. But for the last two months she’s simply been known as the girl who ran the crew that robbed the greatest museum in the world. Katarina Bishop has worn a lot of labels in her short life life.įriend. ![]() ![]() ![]() Anne leaves Lawrenceville to escape her petty, judgmental mother, and yet their dialogue – “Did you ever kiss any other boy?” … “Oh, a few years back, when Willie and I first started dating, we’d play Spin the Bottle” – is trusting and open, as if between two friends, with no trace of the secrecy and resentment that such a harsh and punitive mother-daughter dyad would create. The characterisation is flaky, and the relationships two-dimensional. ![]() It covers the fortunes and friendship, but mainly the drug addiction, of three women: the prim but outrageously beautiful Anne Welles the Judy Garland-inspired vaudeville star Neely O’Hara and the busty airhead Jennifer North. ![]() First published in 1966, it has a status in the Virago canon that means many of us will have read it young, as a necessary classic, in that interim phase as a reader where you consume books like air, not stopping to interrogate their quality. T he first thing you notice, rereading Valley of the Dolls is how badly it functions as fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() "You are a rare woman, Alice Roosevelt." As Alice soldiers through the devastation of two world wars and brazens out a cutting feud with her famous Roosevelt cousins, it's no wonder everyone in the capital refers to her as the Other Washington Monument-and Alice intends to outlast them all. With the canny sophistication of the savviest politician on the Hill, Alice uses her celebrity to her advantage, testing the limits of her power and the seductive thrill of political entanglements.īut Washington, DC is rife with heartaches and betrayals, and when Alice falls hard for a smooth-talking congressman it will take everything this rebel has to emerge triumphant and claim her place as an American icon. That’s why Annabeth’s solo quest is my first save! 2. This is by far my favourite of ‘The Heroes of Olympus’ series – where the gang are all together for the first time! (And who wouldn’t love the moment when Annabeth and Percy are reunited? They’re just precious.) Although ‘The House of Hades’ is beautiful, I don’t think I could live through the cliffhanger a second time. But, there are definitely some books on my shelves that I couldn’t imagine leaving behind: I think it would almost be easier to answer the opposite question, as I definitely know which books I’d leave for kindling. For any book-lover, this is the worst case scenario! It’s like asking a mother to chose between the children: its impossible to pick the ones you love the most. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But this project has serious problems, the most obvious of which is its strong aversion to sustained thinking of any kind. ![]() The premise seems simple enough: a basic orientation in ethics as discussed by philosophers, with the practical aim of giving people a tool kit that might help them think more clearly about what they do and why. With that difficulty in mind, he set out to condense this material for his readers, who presumably are mostly also his show’s viewers, and to show them, in the words of his new book’s title, How to Be Perfect. The reading he did on ethics and moral philosophy that eventually led to the latter show imbued him with a strong conviction: that being good is very hard for most people.
